Students in Foundations of Western Civilization (HIS 115) and Mastering the Academic Envirornment (UNC 100) will explore the foundation of all that is noble, heroic and tragic both in Western Civilization and in themselves. As the West gave us Plato and Aquinas, Caesar and Charlemagne, and matured into a luminous and dynamic civilization often in spite of itself, so too will students learn to distinguish between the things that restrain their development as human beings and the things that will help them to flourish. These courses together will nurture in students clarity of thought and habit so that they will develop the attitudes, aptitudes and competencies that lead to success in college, and in life.
