This learning community will allow students to explore the power and art of poetry. We will explore and practice various forms of creative writing, playwriting, and flash fiction/short stories. In terms of poetry, we will concentrate on basic forms, including rhyme scheme, prosody, sonnets, villanelles, as well as various experimental and performance techniques. This creative writing poetry section will be closely tied to some of the poetry formations covered in ENG 151, which will include early oral epics, revisions to traditional Western forms, parody and response poetry, the Black Arts Movement, jazz poetics, the Nuyorican Movement and slam poetry. CWP 101 writing assignments will also explore appreciation and response to various styles of poetry.
